Properties of Friction

When we push an object lying on a table with a small amount of force. It does not move at all. We can say that the surface of the table top opposes the motion or it exerts some force on the object which acts in the direction opposite to the direction in which the force being applied. Let us discuss some properties  about the force of friction.

1. Friction is produced only when one body is made to slide upon another body. If an object is placed in contact to the other object. that is the two surfaces are in contact and we apply force to slide the object frictional force comes into action and opposes the motion.

2. Frictional Forces Opposes Motion: Friction always prevent movement and tries to stop the body, for example a ball moving on the ground slows down gradually and stops after covering some distance.Force is required to change the state of motion of any object. So this can only happen if some force is exerted by the ground on the ball to stop it  This force is the frictional force.

3. Wear and Tear of the Moving Parts: It wears off the surface of contact of two bodies. for example the grooves in the tyres of vehicle become smooth because while running on the road there is friction between the tyres and the surface of the road.

4. Direction of Friction is Opposite to the Direction of Motion: The direction of frictional force is always in the direction opposite to the direction of motion. For example if we push a book lying on the table towards the right side the book will move through some distance to the right side and then it will stop. This is only possible if some force is applied in the direction opposite to the direction of motion.
